gonpachi interior

Gonpachi Beverly Hills will introduce you to a new level of traditional Japanese cuisine, served in a fabulously authentic setting. From hand-pounded buckwheat soba noodles to sushi to delicacies from the charcoal grill, you'll embark on a culinary excursion that until now required crossing an ocean to enjoy.

Their young new chef has planned a well-balanced, filling menu that I'm confident you'll enjoy. I had a chance to taste it in advance and can't wait to savor it again.

Just about anyone who drives La Cienega Boulevard every day can't help but note the Japanese restaurant on the site of the old Ed Debevic's diner. Opened in 2007, Gonpachi is the first U.S. restaurant from the well-known Japanese chain owned by Global-Dining Inc., which also owns Monsoon at the 3rd St. Promenade and Café LaBoheme in West Hollywood.

Fashioned by miyadaiku carpenters from 300-year-old aged wood and roof tiles brought from Japan, the restaurant has an appearance of a traditional Japanese home. The wood was used by old folk dwelling, andthe authentic roof tiles gleam with the luminance of oxidized silver. The building itself is comprised of three distinct wings which encircle the inner garden and express the traditional beauty of Japanese architecture.

You enter through a moon gate into a lovely courtyard with a stream shaded by Japanese maples. The bar is to the right and near the entrance is a glassed-in room, where a master soba chef rolls out the supple buckwheat dough and cuts it into fine strands.

There's a big double-story room looking onto the charcoal grills where chefs cook tidbits on skewers. There's a sushi bar, and a sake tasting room too. Upstairs are a series of private nooks, and around the corner, semiprivate dining rooms that look onto the garden.

Join us for dinner and enter to win a pair of tickets to the GMCLA's Spring Event
